Karen has a transgender daughter and she’s found great support here in Richmond through PFLAG – Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
“When [my daughter] first came out, I was really worried about the bullying, harassment, and ridicule she could face,” said Karen who asked we only use her first name. “But this group has provided a safe space and sparks conversation with others going through a variety of similar situations.”
The Richmond chapter of PFLAG is holding it’s 20 anniversary Thursday night at the Gay Community Center, 1407 Sherwood Avenue, Richmond, and it’s opening its doors to folks who have been supported by the group, and by folks who want to learn more.
PFLAG’s mission is to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered individuals, along with their families and allies. It’s a nonprofit organization geared to support, advocate, and educate families and communities about sexual orientation and discrimination.
Karen, who’s been on the Richmond PFLAG Board for almost four years, spoke about her appreciation of getting to know other parents of sexual minority youth during the monthly PFLAG meetings.
“It’s really nice to meet other parents with LGBT kids,” said Karen, calling some of the interactions she’s had “inspiring.”
“You get to see the ones who had their children come out a long time ago and see how successful they are with the love and support they share… At the same time, you meet the parents who just had their child come out and it’s awesome to help them work through the stress and worry they originally face as well.”
Thursday’s celebration will be a chance for local Richmonders to share their stories and celebrate the past while looking forward to the future.
“It’ll be a casual way for people together together. There will be food and drinks and hopefully some really good conversation. We just encourage people to bring themselves and a positive attitude. Everyone is looking forward to it,” said Karen.
The event Thursday night will also kick off PFLAG’s “20 for 20” campaign and starts at 7pm. All are encouraged to attend!
